One year, when Li Hwa had come to the Kingdom of the Sun to study the arts of healing, she was concocting a tincture when she accidentally mixed in a dangerously volatile compound. In a fluster of panic, she upset the whole solution onto herself, and amidst the pain and scalding heat her skin and tentacles began to mutate. Even her mind itself was morphed by it.

She began to believe that extreme fear could lead to ecstatic purification of the mind and body, and thus brought down a poisonous purple rain wherever she could with her jellyfish tentacles. The toxic rain slowly worked its way under people’s skins and led them into terrified delusions. The erstwhile healer had become a zealot of horror and suffering…
